Getting my hands dirty!

So my poor car, (whose name is Lolita, yes that's right LOLITA, because she's red and racy)... was in desperate need of an oil change. I was planning to take Lolita to Oil Can Henry's and use the $7 off coupon I confiscated from my boyfriend's mail, and call it a good deal! Well... Josh's truck also needed an oil change and since we've both been working on being money savvy, he decided that it would be more economical if we changed our own oil. Wait, what? Don't you have to be a trained professional for that!? I guess the fact that Josh is a nuclear machanic might be helpful when comes to this kind of thing, he obviously knows his way around an engine and all that... but me? I'm a PHOTOGRAPHER. I push a button. With one finger. And there's no OIL involved. So when Josh suggested that we change our own oil, I took that to mean that HE would change the oil, and I would document. Obviously. But nooooooooOOOooOOoooo. So at 10:00pm, in his little garage at his apartment, he taught me an important life skill. :) He first showed me how to do it (as any good teacher would do), on his truck, then made me do it on my own car. GULP. Luckily, he stayed and supervised, you know, to make sure I didn't destroy poor Lolita. Then he busted out the video camera and in a strange roll reversal, I played with the wrench and he documented. :)

I'll spare you the entire 11 minute video but here's a little clip of my reaction to draining the (FILTHY, DISGUSTING, DIRTY) oil... Please excuse the maniacal laughter at the beginning, I was just so excited that I was able to loosen that bolt all by myself, I had been working on it for a while. :)

Josh, thank you so much for your patience! I'm very proud of the fact that I can change my own oil now, I feel very self-sufficiant. In fact, maybe next time I'll do both of our vehicles. All. By. Myself. Waitaminute... was that your whole plan?!!?!

  1. oh, too funny! But I've never done it so good for you. And Josh sounds like a great teacher. If it were me, next time I would be wearing gloves of some sort. You know those thin ones that doctors wear...just saying. But you're right, it is a life skill.
